To become a High Court advocate in India requires a BCI-approved LL.B., State Bar Council enrollment, and clearing the AIBE to receive a Certificate of Practice. Although passing AIBE allows immediate practice, gaining experience in district courts is strongly recommended before moving to the High Court. A High Court advocate is a licensed professional authorized to practice, plead, and act on behalf of clients specifically before a High Court.

2 Ways to Become a High Court Advocate
1- High Court govt. Advocate
Govt. advocate officially known as the Public Prosecutor Officer. Each state in India has a District Court and a High Court, where both private lawyers and government lawyers are present. Here, we’ll explain the key criteria for selection as a government lawyer, which include the following:
- The candidate must pass the minimum graduation level of law education i.e., L.L.B.
- The minimum age of the candidate should be 35 to 45 years.
- A person should have worked as an advocate in the District Court for a minimum of 2 years and in the High Court for a minimum of 5 years.
- The candidate must be enrolled with the Bar Council of the concerned State and must have passed the All India Bar Council Examination(AIBE) within two years of enrolment.
APO Exam
The state government selects Public Prosecutors through the APO exam (Odisha).
- The age limit for APO exam candidates is between 21 – 35 years (Depending upon the respective State).
- The APO exam has 3 stages: Prelim, Main, and Interview round.
2- High Court Practicing Advocate
Although not technically required at the outset, working in district courts for several years is invaluable for mastering courtroom procedures and building practical advocacy skills. Specific legal roles, like the Supreme Court’s Advocate on Record (AOR), necessitate passing additional examinations.
An advocate’s responsibilities include drafting legal documents, conducting legal research, filing petitions, and litigating civil or criminal cases. A High Court advocate is a licensed legal professional qualified to represent clients in the highest court of a state.
Educational qualification
To become a high court advocate, you must obtain a 3-year LL.B or 5-year BA LL.B. degree from a recognized university. For admission to a law course, generally, you need a minimum 45% in graduation or 12th, and 40% for SC/ST, 42% for the OBC category.
